Kavach 4.0: The Giant Leap Towards Safer Railways
Indian Railways has made a huge leap in the improvement of passenger safety with the accelerated deployment of Kavach 4.0, one of the most advanced safety systems. The technology was designed to achieve zero train accidents and derailments. Installation is being done in locomotive engines across the country. Notably, the process which required 15 days was streamlined to just 22 hours.
The Kavach system is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) solution that is strong enough to revolutionize railway safety and operational efficiency in India. Indian Railways has a plan to install this system in all electrified locomotives and tracks in the next six years, creating a new global benchmark for cost-effective and speedy implementation.
Daily Installations of Kavach 4.0
Indian Railways currently equips about 200 locomotive engines daily with the Kavach 4.0 system across its 68 locomotive maintenance workshops. Each workshop can handle the installation of Kavach in 10 to 12 locomotives every day, depending on operational schedules. Locomotives coming in for regular maintenance are now equipped with this system within their 24-hour maintenance window, thereby minimizing downtime and ensuring efficiency.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is making phenomenal progress in installing Kavach compared to the rest of the world, both in terms of speed and cost. It is a perfect fit in the vision of the ministry toward a safe, accident-free railway network
Impact on Companies Manufacturing Kavach
The rapid roll-out of Kavach 4.0 is also helping the companies that manufacture and install this equipment grow. Major players in the space include HBL Power Systems, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), CG Power, and Kernex Microsystems. All these companies have already generated excellent returns for investors in the last two years and will continue to benefit from this increased demand.
1. BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited):
Current stock price: ₹306

These companies are set to witness huge growth since Indian Railways has decided to install Kavach 4.0 in 10,000 locomotives over the next two years and thereafter installations across the remaining fleet in the next four years.
Training and Future Plans
To roll out Kavach effectively, Indian Railways has so far trained over 9,000 personnel to handle and install the system. Tenders have already been issued for installing Kavach on 15,000 km of railway tracks; 1,000 km has already been completed. First to be equipped are the key routes: Mumbai to Baroda and Delhi to Palwal.
The next two years will focus on reaching the target of equipping 10,000 locomotives, and it is expected that all electrified tracks and locomotives will be covered in six years. Indian Railways, with a fleet of 18,000 electrified locomotives, is on its way to creating a world-class, safety-oriented railway system.
A Safer Future for Indian Railways
Kavach 4.0 is not just a technological upgrade but a transformative step toward making Indian Railways one of the safest rail networks globally. The initiative showcases India’s commitment to leveraging innovation to enhance passenger safety, operational efficiency, and economic growth.
As the system rolls out nationwide, passengers can look forward to safer travel, while the companies behind Kavach continue to thrive, delivering significant returns to investors.
