New Delhi – In a significant judgment, the Delhi High Court provided relief to a man accused in a false rape case, quashing the FIR filed against him. The court emphasized that while laws related to sexual offenses are critical for protecting women, their misuse to harass innocent individuals is a serious concern.
Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, presiding over the case, observed that the misuse of such laws undermines the justice system and poses a societal risk.
Case Details: Filed in 2021
The case dates back to September 2021, when a woman filed an FIR at Hauz Khas police station in South Delhi, accusing the man of raping her under the pretense of marriage.
The accused contested the allegations in court, seeking the FIR’s dismissal. He presented evidence, including WhatsApp chats and audio recordings, to prove the consensual nature of their relationship.
Man’s Proposal Rejected by Woman
Upon examining the evidence, the court found that the man was willing to marry the complainant, but she had chosen to pursue a relationship with someone else. In the WhatsApp chats submitted, the woman herself informed the man about her decision.
The court concluded that the physical relationship between the two was consensual and not based on any false promise of marriage. The allegations, it observed, were aimed solely at harassing the man.
Court’s Important Advice
In its verdict, the court stressed the importance of respecting laws meant to address serious crimes like rape. However, it also issued a warning, stating that false accusations not only harm individuals but also compromise the integrity of the justice system.
Women, the court advised, should refrain from filing baseless complaints as such actions go against the essence of the law.
Broader Implications
This ruling not only provided justice to the innocent man but also sent a strong message to society. Misusing laws for personal vendettas can never be justified and risks eroding trust in the judicial process.
