Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket. He played a total of 287 matches across all formats and claimed 765 wickets. Ashwin is the second-highest wicket-taker for India, with only Anil Kumble ahead of him, who has 953 wickets.
Retirement Decision After the Gabba Test Ashwin made his retirement announcement after the conclusion of the Gabba Test. The BCCI responded to his decision via a tweet. Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared in a press conference, “When I arrived in Perth, Ashwin spoke to me about his retirement. A player’s decision like this should be respected.” Rohit also mentioned that Ashwin would return to India the next day.
537 Wickets and 6 Centuries in Test Cricket In his Test career, Ashwin has taken 537 wickets in 106 matches. He holds the record for taking five wickets in an innings 37 times and has taken 10 wickets in a match on 8 occasions. In ODIs, he claimed 156 wickets, while in T20s, he took 72 wickets. As a batsman, Ashwin scored 3503 runs in Test cricket, including 6 centuries. He has also scored 8 centuries in First-Class cricket.
Most Five-Wicket Hauls by Indian Bowlers Ashwin holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket by an Indian bowler, with 37 such feats, surpassing Anil Kumble, who achieved this 35 times. The overall record is held by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who took five wickets in an innings 67 times. Ashwin shares second place with Shane Warne. Ashwin has taken the most wickets against England, claiming 150 wickets in 53 matches. Australia follows in second place, with Ashwin taking 146 wickets in 50 matches.
Outstanding Performance on Foreign Soil Ashwin’s best performance overseas came in Australia, where he claimed 71 wickets in 38 matches. In Sri Lanka, he took 49 wickets in 16 matches. In India, he recorded 475 wickets in 131 matches.
